PRP Therapy for Hair Restoration involves a patient’s blood extraction, refining to isolate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and then re-injected into the scalp. This plasma is rich in vital proteins that promote natural hair regeneration. The effectiveness of PRP can differ from person to person due to variations in the quality of the plasma. Additionally, some individuals might need several sessions to achieve their desired results. At Triangle Wellness and Anti Aging in Raleigh, NC, we specialize in innovative hair loss treatments using Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). Led by Dr. Adam Becker, our clinic offers a scientifically backed, minimally invasive solution to hair thinning and loss, helping you regain fuller, healthier hair.

Contraindications

PRP treatment is not recommended for individuals with any of the following conditions:

  • A compromised immune system.
  • Scalp-related skin issues (consultation with a dermatologist may be necessary prior to treatment), systemic cancer, or recent chemotherapy.
  • Current use of steroid therapy, presence of communicable diseases, blood disorders including platelet abnormalities, or ongoing anticoagulant treatments (such as Warfarin).
  • Pregnancy.

Symptoms Addressed by PRP

PRP treatments are effective for various hair loss symptoms:

  • Thinning hair
  • Receding hairline
  • Bald patches
  • Reduced hair volume
  • Slow hair growth

Schedule for PRP Therapy: Initial Treatment and Maintenance

The treatment plan for intradermal injections of autologous pure PRP in affected areas is methodically structured to maximize effectiveness. Initially, patients undergo 3 monthly sessions. A series of 3 sessions follow this phase, each spaced out every other month. After completing these initial stages, the focus shifts to maintenance, which involves 2 to 3 annual follow-up sessions. This structured approach ensures a comprehensive and sustained treatment outcome.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

7 days before treatment:

  • Stop using blood thinning supplements like vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids, and multivitamins at least 7 days before the treatment.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you are on blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin), Plavix, heparin, or Eliquis, as these might be contraindications for the treatment.
  • Refrain from taking aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren, and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). PRP therapy relies partly on the inflammatory response these drugs suppress.
  • Avoid too much sun or heat exposure during this period.

3 Days Before Treatment:

  • Limit or avoid alcohol intake.
  • Try to stop or reduce smoking, as it can affect the healing process.
  • Continue using other hair loss treatments like laser therapy, minoxidil, or hormone-blocking medications. Consult your provider if unsure about stopping any medication.
  • Hair coloring is permissible up to 7 days before the procedure.

Diet and Fluid Intake

To prepare for your upcoming procedure, it’s essential to increase your hydration. On the day before the procedure, add an extra 2 glasses of water in the morning, 2 at lunch, and 2 at dinner to your usual water intake. This will ensure proper hydration, making the blood draw more efficient and successful.

On the Day of the Procedure:

  • Start the day with a shower, washing your hair thoroughly using your usual shampoo.
  • Refrain from applying any hair sprays, gels, or other styling products.
  • If you use a hair system, remove it before shampooing and do not wear it prior to your PRP treatments.
  • Have a regular meal for breakfast or lunch on the day of your PRP session.
  • Drink a 500 mL bottle of water at least two hours before your appointment.
  • Following the treatment, it is highly recommended to take a hot shower and wash your hair in the evening to enhance the benefits of the PRP therapy.

Immediately Following Treatment:

After your treatment, it’s normal to experience some side effects such as bruising, redness, itching, swelling, or soreness, which can last from 2 to 5 days. Should you feel any pain or discomfort, Tylenol or other Acetaminophen-containing products can be taken as instructed. A bruise may appear at the blood draw site, and a tingling sensation in the treated area is also common.

In rare instances, if you notice signs of a skin infection or unusual discomfort, contact our office immediately as these can typically be resolved with antibiotics or anti-inflammatory treatment. It’s advised to avoid using ice on the injected area, as it can inhibit the inflammatory process essential for the treatment’s effectiveness. However, ice or cold compresses can be applied if needed to reduce swelling.

Please continue to avoid anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren, etc., for at least 3 days post-procedure, ideally up to 7 days. Refrain from vigorous exercise, sun, and heat exposure for at least 2 days following your treatment.

Do not wet your hair for 3 hours post-treatment, and for the first 3 days, use a pH-balanced shampoo. Avoid applying any hair products for at least 6 hours after the treatment. A hot shower and hair washing in the evening post-treatment are recommended to enhance the effects of PRP.

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and swimming for 24 hours, and refrain from smoking for 3 days following the treatment, as smoking can negatively impact healing. Also, hold off on resuming Minoxidil (Formula 82M, Rogaine®), hair coloring, and straightening for 3 days. Continue to increase your water intake during the first week post-treatment and avoid blood-thinning agents like vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids for at least one week after your treatment.
